Fresh Fruit Gummies

Gummies are certainly a favourite treat among young children. Here we share our healthier version, a recipe that has no added sugar and is simple enough to make with the kids at home or at the Centre!

For this recipe you’ll need only a few ingredients - your chosen fruit ( we used watermelon, but pretty much any fresh, frozen or canned fruit, or even a combo, will work), gelatine (we used powder), and your chosen mould. If using canned fruit, opt for the ones preserved in juice, instead of the ones in syrup, which are very high in sugar. We got this cute bunny Easter-themed mould from Spotlight, but they’re also available at Kmart, Look Sharp and many other cooking or craft stores. You’ll also need to create a puree with the fruit and heat it over the stove to melt the gelatine, so you’ll need access to a food processor, hand mixer or blender, as well as, a heating element.

Because this recipe does need to be cooked, it’s best to do with a small group of children, or ask the Centre’s cook to whip some up for a special occasion. Fruit purees are a great solution for leftover or over ripe fruit, and can be easily frozen in smaller containers.

These gummies don’t take much time to make and double up as a science activity, as children will be able to see the changes the fruit undergoes from a solid, whole fruit, down to a puree, and finally a yummy gummy!

Makes 12 gummies

Ingredients:

1 cup of fresh fruit (any fruit will work except citrus, which will not react well with the gelatine)

2 Tbsp Gelatine powder

Water, as needed

Method:

  1. Roughly chop up your fruit and put it in the food processor. Whizz the fruit until it becomes pureed. Depending on the type of fruit, you may need to add just enough water for the fruit to puree effectively (don’t add too much as this will dilute the flavour).

  2. Sieve out any seeds.

  3. Put your fruit into a pot and heat over a low heat on the stove or table top heating element.

4. Add the gelatine and mix or whisk until it has complete dissolved.

5. Pour your juice mixture into your mould (our mould was really floppy so we supported it in a baking tray).

6. Place the mould into the freezer for no longer than 25 minutes (this will solidify the gummies, but don’t leave them longer or the will freeze!) or in the fridge.
